On September 22, PICO, a virtual reality brand owned by ByteDance, held a new product launch event and officially launched the new PICO 4 series of products in Europe, America, Japan, South Korea and China. South East Asia.
As a new generation of all-in-one VR devices, the PICO 4 series has made substantial improvements in wearing comfort, audio-visual experience, interactive capability and content ecology, providing users with a more immersive VR experience.
The 128GB Pico 4 is priced at €429 ($422.23), while the 256GB version is priced at €499, which will start accepting pre-orders on September 23.
The PICO 4 series adopts crepe optics and smaller display panels, making the headset thinner and lighter overall. The battery is located at the back of the headset while the whole device (excluding strap and battery) weighs 295g, which is about 40% lighter than the Quest 2. The PICO 4 will support a 105 degree field of view, which is greater than the 98 degree field of view of the Neo 3. The PICO 4 series is equipped with a super vision screen with binocular resolution as high as 4K+ , with a PPI (pixels per inch) of 1200 and a refresh rate of 90 Hz, which makes the display clearer and more detailed.
In terms of cameras, the PICO 4 is equipped with four black and white wide-angle follow camera modules, but a 16MP RGB camera is added in the middle part of the head display to add color VST passthrough. Additionally, the new headset claims to be equipped with the largest battery capacity in the VR industry and supports fast charging.
In terms of touch and interaction, PICO 4 series controllers adopt “HyperSense broadband motors” and star arc column design as a whole. The motors can provide vibrations of different intensities ranging from 50 to 500 Hz, and realize precise 6DoF spatial positioning of the head and hand thanks to infrared sensors placed along the arc.
The new headset will also offer users a wide range of content, spanning fitness, video and gaming. The company launched the PICO Fitness program, where users can view exercise data in the VR fitness app and log their energy consumption through motion tracking. The PICO 4 will recommend exercise programs and VR fitness apps to users based on their goals. For example, “Body Combat” will provide users with combat classes, which caters to those who not only want practical knowledge, but also those who want a short and intense exercise program.
It is worth mentioning that PICO will also bring users a new avatar system, and users can freely create a complete avatar in the 3D digital world, which can imitate subtle expressions and body movements. PICO has also worked with famous artists such as Zero Cosmos, and users are free to create their own unique virtual avatars.
PICO fitness band
The company also introduced its version of a fitness band. The band offers a variety of functions, including a wearable positioning module, which can track users’ body movements, such as shaking, tilting and kicking, and can also interpret body posture through a AI algorithm. Although it is a locator designed for VR fitness by name, it is suitable enough for social VR applications, for example, gamers can control virtual avatars in 3D digital world much better than before.
PICO 4 Pro
It is a high-end version of the Pico 4, which will be equipped with infrared cameras under the left and right eyes and a headset to track eye movements and facial expressions. These two functions can not only bring better VR socialization, but also can automatically detect IPD (interpupillary distance) and drive an electric lens accordingly. However, the Pico 4 Pro is positioning itself as a professional VR headset, and it’s unclear whether it will be sold to consumers at this time.
On September 27, PICO will hold a launch event in China to announce pricing and sales channels for new products. On this occasion, the new green VR content launched in China will be unveiled as the highlight of this launch event.
