Leaked technical presentation of the 2015 VW Passat
Ahead of an official unveiling scheduled for next month, the technical presentation of the 2015 VW Passat has been leaked in China. Here is a summary of the details –
Dynamic Light Assist technology with LED headlights: The new Passat will preview VW’s dynamic lighting technology with integrated static and cornering lights. That aside, the high-end variant of the car will get full LED headlights.
LED tail lights: The 2015 Passat will come standard with full LED taillights.
Instrument cluster: VW ditched the traditional instrument cluster and instead used a new 12.3-inch instrument cluster with a resolution of 1440 x 540 pixels. The display doubles up for navigation and seems inspired by the new Audi TT cluster.
Weight gain : According to the presentation, VW achieved a total weight saving of 85 kg in the new Passat through the use of high-strength and hot-formed steel and aluminum in some areas.
Length: The new Passat will measure 4,767mm in length, compared to the current model which is 4,769mm.
Engines: All engines comply with EU6 standards. The smaller engine will be a 1.6-liter TDI producing 118 hp, and the premium diesel will use a 2.0-liter Bi-Turbo unit producing 240 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Gasoline engines range from a 1.4-liter TSI to a 2.0-liter TSI.
Plug-in hybrid: Confirming earlier claims, the new Passat will get a plug-in hybrid variant with a 9.9 kWh battery providing a pure electric range of 50 km. The charging socket will be located in the VW badge in the grille of the car.
Entertainment system: The entertainment system will get a MirrorLink function for smartphones in which the car system acts as a screen for the phone.
HUD: The new Passat will be equipped with a head-up display system.
Park assistant: The 2015 Passat receives the VWs Park Assistant 3.0 system which has an option in which the driver can manually select a parking space for the car. In the current system, the car has to detect a parking space on its own.
Camera: A 360-degree panoramic camera will be offered on the car.
Trailer Assistant System: With this system, the driver of the new Passat can accurately assess the turning radius of the hitched trailer.
Traffic assistant systems: A rear traffic warning system with side assist system and blind spot detection will be seen on the new Passat. It will also add city braking function and lane keeping assistant to the car. If the driver of the Passat deviates from his lane, the system will first warn the driver with an alarm and a flashing logo. If the driver does not respond to this, haptic feedback on the brake pedal will attempt to get the driver’s attention.
Finally, the system will resort to tightening the seat belts, engaging the cruise control and stopping the car smoothly if the driver does not react.
The new Passat will be announced next month and European sales are expected to start by the end of this year. VW India has confirmed that the new generation will be launched when the time comes.
